Nifty Ideas: Camping Part 1

Another round of fantastic nifty ideas I have discovered. You too may become inspired by these nifty things and in turn create your own. If you have any of your own nifty ideas please share them with me I'd love to learn about what is nifty to you!

We spent the Labor Day weekend camping in the Shenandoah National Park which is our favorite place to go for a far yet not so far get away. As we spent our time enjoying the outdoors I thought about several things we use that make our camping experience enjoyable. Since we have so many favorite things I'm spreading this out over a few entries.

Setting up our picnic table is the most important part of getting my outdoor kitchen in order. I am a fan of these table cloth clamps. What a help it is to keep that tablecloth (we use vinyl which is waterproof and wipes clean.) from blowing away. (Or keeping it on the table when you have fidgety kids.) The clamps can be found at most discount chain stores I recommend choosing the stainless steel clamps over plastic. The metal is more durable and likely to fit many table sizes.

Having a way to protect the picnic table from sun and rain is important so we bring along our canopy with the screen sides. This is a great way to have a shady spot and enjoy a bug free supper. We bought ours years ago and it has been worth the investment.

A few years back we learned a hard lesson about camping and the reality of rain. If you rely on cooking over a fire and it rains, well, dinner just might not be cooked. After that terrible experience we learned to always bring along a camp stove. Nothing too large ours is a Coleman Powerpack 1 Burner, just the size we need. It is a fantastic time saver for making a warm breakfast on those mornings we leave early for a hike.

A small folding table is handy for food prep and clean up. It's a great help for putting your grilling tools, camp stove or for a washtub when you're doing the washing up.
